Baku / 20.11.17Turan: The criminal case against the journalist Afgan Mukhtarly will be examined in the Balaken District Court (441 km north-west of Baku). Turan was informed about this by Nemat Kerimli, a lawyer.

According to him, Mukhtarly will be sent to the Sheki Pretrial Detention Center today. The date of the trial has not yet been determined.

Mukhtarly, according to the defense, was abducted in Tbilisi on May 29 and secretly transferred to Azerbaijan, where a criminal case was initiated against him under Art. 315.2 (resistance to a representative of the government with the use of violence), 318.1 (illegal crossing of the state border) and 206.1 (smuggling) of the Criminal Code.

Mukhtarly rejected the accusations. Amnesty International recognizes him as a "prisoner of conscience". -03B06-
