Condemned journalist looking for work

Baku / 15.08.17 / Turan: The next trial on the case of Elchin Hasanzade, the deputy editor of the newspaper Yukselish Namine will be held on September 6 in the Supreme Court, presided over by judge Hafiz Nasibov. By the decision of the court of Nizami district of the capital, Elchin Hasanzade was convicted under the Article 221.1 (hooliganism) for corrective works for a year, with a retention of 20% from a monthly salary. However, for a long time he cannot get a job, which complicates the penalty payments.

"In October last year I registered at the Employment Center, but from there I was offered jobs only once - to sweep streets for 125 manats a month. Of this money, I had to give 25 to the state. I did not accept this offer, because the salary did not suit me. Finding a job in the country with a normal salary is the most difficult task. I asked for time to find a job with a normal salary," the journalist said.

If he does not find a job, he will be forced to spend a year in prison. "Due to the fact that I did not find a job, the conditions were toughened. I must sign an electronic agreement with the employer, the owner must provide a copy of his VÖEN to the court, and sign a declaration in connection with the payment of taxes to the state. It is impossible to find a job under such conditions.

To date under such conditions, work can only be found in state-run structures. In what state structure will take a person who criticizes the state administration?" he said, expressing hope for the help of any company that is able to fulfill such conditions.

* Elchin Hasanzadeh in 2015 complained about the former head of the agency "Asia" Jafar Jafarov connection with exerting pressure from the latter. Subsequently, this complaint turned against him. In March 2016, a lawsuit was filed against Hasanzade under the Article 221.1 (hooliganism). Subsequently, the Article was re-qualified for a more severe 221-3 (committing hooligan actions with the use of cold steel). In March last year, the state prosecutor asked to deprive Hasanzade of freedom for a period of 3 and a half years. However, the judge sentenced him to a year of correctional labor, as already mentioned above. -0--
