IRFS condemned the verdict to Afghan Mukhtarli
Baku / 15.01.18 / Turan: The Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS) condemned the politically motivated verdict to investigative journalist Afgan Mukhtarly and demanded his immediate release. The statement of the IRFS issued on January 15 reads that Mukhtarly was convicted despite the completely fabricated evidence and outrageous circumstances of the arrest, whom the secret services kidnapped in the Georgian capital and illegally transported to Azerbaijan.
The IRFS expresses concern that so far Georgian law enforcement agencies have not completed the investigation of the abduction of Mukhtarly and considers insufficient efforts of the Georgian government in this direction. IRFS also calls on the Georgian authorities to closely monitor the safety of other Azerbaijani journalists and civil society activists.
ISRB again calls upon the Azerbaijani authorities to release Afgan Mukhtarli and all other journalists and bloggers: Mehman Huseynov, Seymour Hazi, Aziz Orujov, Nijat Aliyev, Araz Guliyev, Fikrat Ibishbayli (Faramazoglu), Afgan Sadigov, Elchin Ismayilli, Javid Shiraliyev, Zia Asadli and Arshad Ibragimov , bloggers Rashad Ramazanov and Ilkin Rustamzade, writers Sadai Shakarli and Tofig Hasanov, as well as graffiti activists Giyas Ibrahimov and Bayram Mammadov.
IRFS calls on PACE to begin the January session with the condemnation of the authorities of Azerbaijan for the persecution of journalists and violation of their obligations to the Council of Europe, and the European Union and the OSCE to start applying sanctions against human rights violators in Azerbaijan. -06D-
