Russian Astronomer Detained in Azerbaijan Released
Baku / 17.01.18 / Turan: Detained in Azerbaijan in early January, a research fellow at the Institute of Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Chulkov has been released and is already in Russia.
Earlier, his mother reported that her son had flown on January 3 a direct flight from Moscow to Gandja. Two days later he decided to visit Lake Goygol, 50 kilometers to the south of Gandja and not far from the front line (the northern sector of contact of Armenian and Azerbaijani troops), after which he ceased to communicate.
Later it became known that he was detained by the military near the local military unit. Yesterday the law enforcement bodies of Azerbaijan reported that Chulkov did not obey the requirements of the military and therefore received 10 days of administrative arrest. Upon serving his sentence, he was released.
The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Baku confirmed the information about the release of Chulkov. "According to the information we have, Dmitry Chulkov is already in the territory of the Russian Federation," Denis Apashkin, head of the press service of the Russian Embassy in Baku, told Turan. ---06B--

In the annals of Azerbaijan's oil-rich history, the name Witold Zglenicki may not readily come to mind, yet his contributions to the burgeoning oil industry of the late 19th and early 20th centuries are profound and enduring. As the Polish Embassy in Azerbaijan recently commemorated his legacy on April 22 with the presentation of a book detailing his remarkable life, questions arise about why this towering figure remains largely overlooked in the streets and monuments of Baku.
