British lawyer joined the defense of Ilgar Mammadov
Baku / 19.01.18 / Turan: Attorney Jeremy McBride officially joined the defense of the leader of the REAL movement, Ilgar Mammadov, convicted in Azerbaijan. This became possible after Ilgar Mammadov was able to sign the relevant documents, lawyer Fuad Agayev said.
"Today, on January 19, I finally managed to see my client in jail N2," Agayev said, recalling that last week he unsuccessfully tried to send documents on the participation of a British lawyer to the jail. These were the credentials of Ilgar Mammadov to the British lawyer about representing his interests on his two complaints in the European Court, as well as the agreement between the lawyer and the client. Having held these documents for over 24 hours, the jail administration finally handed them over to Mammadov, and they were signed, Agayev said. British lawyer Jeremy McBride represents the famous law firm İnterights and has great international experience.
In particular, he represents Ukraine's interests in suits against Russia.
"We are in touch with him and will cooperate in cases concerning the request of the Committee of Ministers to the European Court of Human Rights and the second case of Ilgar Mammadov's appeal to the Grand Chamber," Agayev said.
* REAL"s leader Ilgar Mammadov was arrested following protests in Ismayilli city in January 2013. In 2014, he was sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of organizing riots and resisting a representative of power with the use of violence.
In 2014 the ECHR concluded that Mamedov was arrested without providing reasonable evidence, and the main purpose of his imprisonment was to punish an oppositionist who criticized the government.
In connection with the failure of the ECHR decision, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe launched a special procedure against Azerbaijan and referred the issue to the ECHR Grand Chamber for consideration.
If the Grand Chamber recognizes Azerbaijan guilty of refusing to comply with the ECHR verdict, then for the sanctioning measures the issue will be repeatedly sent to the Committee of Ministers. The big chamber asked Baku for answers to its questions on this case until March 31. -05D-
