Journalists wage is more than indicated in contracts - M. Aleskerly
Baku/22.01.18/Turan: The trade union of journalists (TUJ) of Azerbaijan conducted a survey, examining the social situation of the country's journalists in 2017. The poll covered 57 editions, including 15 republican newspapers and 4 TV channels, 5 news agencies, 20 news portals, 10 regional newspapers and TV channels. According to the head of the TUJ, Mushvig Aleskerli, in an interview with "Voice of America", the income of journalists varied depending on the possibilities of reactions: 6% of respondents named the sum of monthly incomes 350-400 manats, 56% - 550-600 manats, 30% - 700-900 manats, 8% - 1000-1100 manats. The minimum and maximum limits could not be established.
In the republican newspapers, the monthly incomes of journalists amounted to 250-400 manats. In regional newspapers, journalists earned on average 160-400 manat, and on regional TV channels 250-400 manats. Aleskerli explained that it is a question of the general incomes of journalists, instead of the salary as besides the salary receive also fees.
Are journalists' revenues consistent with their tax payments? Answering this question, Aleskerli said that the questionnaire included a clause on labor contracts and formalizing the employment relationship.
93% of respondents said they work under employment contracts. However, often there is a difference between the salary specified in the contract and the real pay. In reality, the journalist receives more than indicated in the contract. Consequently, there are fewer payments to the tax authorities and the Social Security Fund. Despite such violations by the employer, the TUJ did not apply to the courts.
"Our opportunities allow us only to disclose these facts," Aleskerli said. According to Aleskerli, the publication of these facts indicates the achievement of "high results".
"Before the publication of these facts, in 2002-2003, 83% of journalists worked without employment contracts. Now 93% work under contracts, "Aleskerli said. -03B-

At the heart of this discourse lies the country's tenuous relationship with the principles espoused by the Council of Europe, particularly concerning human rights and political freedoms.
