U.S. Troubled by Sentencing of Gozel Bayramli
Washington/25.01.18/Turan: "The United States is troubled by reports of the sentencing of Popular Front Party deputy chairperson Gozel Bayramli," a State Department official said on Wednesday, January 24, in response to a query from TURAN.
"We urge Azerbaijan to release not only Ms. Bayramli, but all those incarcerated for exercising their fundamental freedoms, and to open space for peaceful political participation," the official told TURAN's Washington D.C. correspondent.
On Jan 23, a court in Azerbaijan sentenced Bayramli to three years in prison in a case criticized by human rights groups.
Bayramli is one of the most outspoken opposition figures in the country. She was detained in May, 2017 at the border with neighboring Georgia following her visit there.
She had been previously arrested in the anti-corruption rally in 2013.-02D-
