Anti-Violence Action against Women in Central Baku (Photo - Video)

Baku / 10.19.19 / Turan: Despite tough opposition from the police, women's activists managed to hold a protest rally against violence against women in central Baku on Sunday afternoon. The protesters, about 50-60 people, mostly girls and women, as well as a group of young men supporting them gathered at the Natavan monument. They intended to march along Torgovaya Street. However, representatives of the police blocked their path and began to tear up posters. Several participants were roughly detained and abducted by force. This made the protesters even angrier, and they said that until they let the detainees go, they began to chant the slogans "Release the detainees!" The police officers had to release some of them, and they showed bruising in their arms. The situation aggravated.

The police had to give in and allow the participants to voice the resolution of the action. This success inspired them and, breaking through the cordon of the police, marched for about 100 meters, chanting the slogans "Don't be silent about violence!", "No violence against women!", "No selective abortion!", "No early marriage!", "Do not reject Istanbul Convention!" and others.

Near the Nizami monument, the police again blocked their path, demanding to disperse. However, the women said that until they let everyone go they would not disperse. Police officers began to assure that everyone was already released. Only after phoning all the detainees and making sure that they were released, the protesters dispersed. One of the protesters said, the protest was related to the fact that 118 cases of domestic violence were recorded in 9 months of 2019, including 32 murders of women and the state is not taking serious measures. "The police generally refuse to deal with complaints of violence against women, arguing, "This is a family matter." We say, "This is not a family matter." Refusing to consider complaints, the police themselves become accomplices in crimes against women," said the rally participant. - 06C-
