Constitutional Court Approves Dissolution of Parliament

Baku /04.12.19 / Turan: On Wednesday December 4, the Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan recognized the dissolution of the Milli Majlis as complying with the Constitution - asking the President to dissolve parliament and hold early parliamentary elections.

The ruling New Azerbaijan Party came forward with the dissolution, citing the need to support reforms and renew the composition of the Milli Majlis.

On December 2, the parliament supported this initiative and adopted a corresponding appeal to the President. On the same day, the head of state sent a request to the Constitutional Court to verify compliance of the parliament’s appeal with the Constitution.

Independent experts questioned the legality and constitutionality of the initiative of parliamentarians. In their opinion, in this case there are no cases provided for by the Constitution for the dissolution of parliament. So, the deputies never rejected the proposals of the executive branch, did not veto laws, and did not withdraw from the performance of their functions.    -06B-
