Police interrupted Anti-Tuberculosis Action in Center of Baku

Baku / 03/25/19 / Turan: At noon on March 24 in Fountain Square in the center of Baku, a group of activists tried to hold an action to acquaint citizens with the rules of protection against tuberculosis infection.

The action was planned by the Red Crescent Society, the international humanitarian organization Hayat and the Public Organization Health Promotion. The latter is based in the Ministry of Justice and cooperates with the Prison Service, carrying out a program of health control of people saved from tuberculosis.

The participants of the action came up with the posters "Say No to Tuberculosis" and "The Future Will Come without Tuberculosis." They approached passersby, offering them booklets and explaining the need for knowledge of simple methods to protect their health.

However, the event was interrupted by the police, which declared to the activists about the inadmissibility of holding an action not coordinated with the authorities. About what permission and from what office it should have been obtained, the police did not explain.

The relevance of social tuberculosis advertising is due to the spread of the disease in the country. Among the CIS countries Azerbaijan occupies an unenviable leading position in the spread of tuberculosis, as well as in the issue of public unawareness of tuberculosis protection.

The NGO Coalition cooperates with the international program TB-REP implemented in countries with a high level of tuberculosis. The Coalition"s activities were successful in the regions of Azerbaijan, where activists campaigned, meeting with members of the Milli Majlis.

In March, during the hearings in the Milli Majlis, the Chief of the Main Medical Department of the Ministry of Justice, Rafael Mehdiyev, said the death rate from tuberculosis in penitentiaries in 2018, compared with 1995, decreased by 126 times, and compared to 2005 - by 11 times, and compared to 2015 - twice.

Mehdiyev noted that this year three prisoners died from tuberculosis, hepatitis and AIDS in the medical institutions of the Ministry. -0-
