Baku / 13.04.19 / Turan: The right to education is enshrined in the Constitution of Azerbaijan, and the law on education says this. However, Giyas Ibrahimov, pardoned in March of this year by the decree of Ilham Aliyev, cannot continue his studies.

According to Giyas, when he was arrested in May 2016, he was a fourth year student at the Slavic University.

"I was arrested when I passed the exam. If I were not arrested, I would graduate from the university. After the arrest, the lawyer sent a notice to the university asking me to allow me to pass the exams while in prison. However, I did not get permission," Giyas said. Upon his release, he decided to complete his studies and a few days ago, he turned to the dean of the journalism department of the university.

"At first, they took me to the dean's office, saying that they didn"t know for sure, they expelled me from the university or sent me on academic leave. The next day, I was received by the dean of the faculty, Eldar Piriyev, who advised me to speak with the rector Nurlana Aliyeva. Having listened to me, she stated that I was expelled from the university and the question of my recovery now is not worth it, since it is already the end of the school year.

In addition, the rector added that the concept of "academic leave" does not exist now. To my question about recovery from the beginning of next year, the rector answered vaguely. All this violates my rights to get an education, and I believe that without restoring me at the university, they continue to revenge me," says Giyas.

The head of the Ministry of Education Sector for Public Relations, Jasarat Valehov, told Turan that he was not familiar with this issue and advised him to contact the university authorities, and noted that all such moments are governed by the provisions of the Law on Education.

Valehov's words were confirmed by education expert Kamran Asadov.

"If for good reason (health, marital status, change of residence, and also due to arrest, the student cannot continue his education and notifies the university about it, he is temporarily excluded from the university. However, when there are no obstacles to continuing his studies, he can continue education, and from the moment when it was interrupted. For example, if the study was interrupted in May, the student should be reinstated at the university from the second semester, since he had already studied the first semester, passed the exams and passed in the second half of the year. In this case, there are usually no problems with recovery," Asadov said. Turan failed to contact the leadership of the Baku Slavic University. -0-
