ECHR Recognizes Violations of Rights of Giyas Ibrahimov and Bayram Mammadov: Government Must Pay Them 72,000 Euros

Baku / 13.02.20 / Turan: The European Court of Human Rights on February 13 ruled on 6 complaints from Azerbaijan filed by youth activists Giyas Ibrahimov and Bayram Mammadov.

The ECHR upheld their complaints of torture, unlawful searches, pre-trial detention, and inhuman treatment.

The court found a violation of the activists' rights under articles: 3 (prohibition of torture), 5 (right to inviolability), 10 (freedom of expression) and 18 (limit on the use of restrictions on rights).

The Azerbaijani government has to pay both activists 72 thousand euros.

Recall that members of the NIDA youth movement Bayram Mammadov and Giyas Ibrahimov were arrested on charges of possession of large-scale drugs and sentenced to 10 years each.

The true reason for their arrest was the writing of political slogans on the monument to Heydar Aliyev in central Baku in May 2016.

They were recognized as political prisoners and amnestied in March 2019.  -16D-
