Two Lawyers Reinstated

Baku / 04.24.19 / Turan: After a one-year break from April 14, the advocacy of two lawyers Asabali Mustafayev and Nemat Karimli was restored.

The powers of the lawyers were suspended by the Bar Association of the Republic of Azerbaijan on April 23, 2018 for a period of one year on the basis of a complaint of the First Deputy Prosecutor General Rustam Usubov. The lawyers were accused of "politicization of cases", respectively, of the Deputy Chairman of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan, Gezal Bayramli, and the journalist Afgan Mukhtarly.

Human rights activists regarded the removal of these lawyers as a political decision, due to the fact that both acted as advocates for "high-profile political affairs."

Note that Gezal Bayramly was arrested in May 2017 and subsequently sentenced to 3 years in prison. She was released in March of this year with a pardon order.

Afgan Mukhtarly was arrested in May 2017 and sentenced to 6 years in prison on charges of smuggling, illegal border crossing and violence against a border guard.

Bayram and Mukhtarly were recognized by human rights organizations as political prisoners. -06D--
