PACE co-rapporteur condemns attack on Ayten Mammadova
Baku/09. 05.12/Turan: Co-rapporteurs of the PACE Monitoring Committee will monitor the investigation into the attack on journalist Ayten Mammadova.
PACE Monitoring Committee co-rapporteur Stefan Schennach told Turan.
"I am shocked by this news. This will be investigated by us, the rapporteurs. We will soon prepare a new report on Azerbaijan for PACE. This (attack on a journalist) is a high level crime, and we will request information from the government on the investigation. We want to see clear action and steps," Schennach said.
The state must protect journalists and free press, he added.
"This will give us an idea of the level of democracy in the country," said Schennach.-06B/16

At today's meeting of the pardon commission under the President of Azerbaijan, over 100 appeals were considered, commission member Alimamed Nuriyev announced. The Commission resumed its work in March. In total, 700 clemency petitions will be considered in the coming weeks, said another member of this structure, Rashad Majid. The executive power of Baku refused the appeal of the National Council of Democratic Forces to hold a rally on April 21.
