Baku/09.09.23/Turan: Many states of the world and a number of international organisations have declared not to recognise the so-called "presidential elections" held by Armenian separatists in Karabakh.
"The UK will not recognise the so-called "presidential elections" held on 9 September in Karabakh. We emphasise the importance of the principles and norms of international law and support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan," UK Ambassador Fergus Auld wrote on social network X (twitter).
In turn, an official spokesman for Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said Islamabad recognises Karabakh as Azerbaijani territory.
"Pakistan considers Karabakh as the sovereign territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the attempt by the illegally established regime to hold so-called "elections" is legally and morally condemned. Such an attempt is also a gross violation of the UN Charter and the principles of existing international law," the spokesman for the Ministry said when asked about the so-called "elections" held in Azerbaijan.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) stated that it does not recognise the so-called "elections" held by Armenians in Azerbaijan, where the Russian peacekeeping contingent is temporarily stationed, and called on the international community to take effective measures to prevent "destructive steps".
Georgia supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"The Georgian Foreign Ministry supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan and does not recognise the so-called presidential elections held in Karabakh on 9 September 2023," the document further said.
EU Foreign Affairs spokesperson Nabila Massrali said that "in view of the so-called elections held in Khankendi/Stepanakert on 9 September, the EU reiterates that it does not recognise the constitutional and legal framework in which the elections took place."
The EU also said it was important for Karabakh Armenians to unite around "leadership that is able and willing to engage in result-oriented discussions with official Baku" and is committed to supporting the process.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry in a statement condemned the "elections" in Karabakh held while Azerbaijan and Armenia were trying to continue peace talks. This was a blow to the peace process, Ankara said.
"The elections held on lands under the control of illegal Armenian forces in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan are a new manifestation of attempts to unilaterally legitimise the current situation in the region, which is contrary to the international law. This step is a clear violation of the international law, including UN Security Council resolutions and OSCE principles," the statement reads.
Turkey called on the UN and the international community not to recognise the "illegitimate elections" and stressed that it supports the process of peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The signing of a peace agreement in the near future would contribute to the establishment of peace and stability in the region, the Turkish Foreign Ministry stressed.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry also condemned the so-called "presidential elections" held on 9 September in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.
"The holding of the so-called "presidential elections" contradicts the norms and principles of the international law, and the election results are invalid. Ukraine reiterates that it supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan within its internationally recognised borders and supports the resolution of the Karabakh conflict by political and diplomatic means," the statement stressed.
The Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration issued a similar statement on 9 September, noting that it "does not recognise the 'presidential elections' held in the Karabakh region and reaffirms Chisinau's strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan within its internationally recognised borders."
Representatives of the Council of Europe, the Turkic Parliamentary Assembly and other international structures also declared their non-recognition of the "elections". -16/06В-
